My guide for first-time Wordpress users, a custom theme in three steps
When launching this blog, I noticed how hard it was to find a “smack in your face” guide on creating a Wordpress site from my own design. all the guides I have seen to date or the advice that I have been given is to read this, download that and click here to familiarise yourself with this that and the other.
Wouldn’t it be great if someone could just answer the question nice and easily without referring you to the read me file or the docs on the Wordpress site?
I’m sure that they are very explanatory and a useful resource, but I’m a Capricorn and apparently we don’t “do” user manuals and instructions, I honestly hardly ever read manuals so would prefer a quick-fire guide.
Here are some simple steps to follow to create your own Wordpress theme:
- Design your site. Include elements such as a menu, latest posts, categories, comments and general widgets that you may wish to use.
- Code it as you would any other site. I ended up with this: www.farstyle.com/2008
- Find a stripped down Wordpress template similar to yours that you can modify, from www.tomorrows-laundry.com
By this stage, you should have installed Wordpress on your local machine or Web server, upload your theme to the”themes” directory, and set it as the default theme in the admin panel.
Oh, you will need to know html and css, but you already know that don’t you?
That is really all there is to it, here are a few more relevant sites you may wish to have a look at;
